YAYI

YAYI is a fashion design project inspired by the absence of the sea and crafted with meticulous detail to its tailoring techniques. Made in Puerto Rico and presented visually in collaborations with other artists and crafters. YAYI experiments with quality finishes in RTW garments. The idea is for the wearer to own timeless (in design & quality) garments that can be passed down generations; pushing away the promotion of consumerism thus keeping clothes away from landfills.

Yazmín (Yayi) Pérez calls herself a "Lost islander, world traveler and European at heart". Passionate about methods of construction and creative labor acquired during her studies in Italy (Polimoda Firenze, Politecnico di Milano) and NYC (Fashion Institute of Technology), she believes fashion manufacturing can be possible again in Puerto Rico by reinforcing the tradition of tailoring and passing it on to a younger generation of crafters focused on sustainability before the information disappears and environmental issues grow.

Yayi Pérez has been part of the Fashion Department faculty at Escuela de Artes Plásticas in San Juan and has also worked developing the garments of other brands in the island. Yayi is part of a community of local designers driven by sustainable practices and quality craftsmanship; a movement they call MODO CONSCIENTE.
